Nature’s Touch: A Sensory Journey

This workshop focuses on hands-on, experiential learning about animals and their habitats. This workshop is created for students who learn best through their sense of touch. The workshop begins with a rainbow walk around the school and then a read aloud of Bioblitz! Counting Critters by Susan Edwards Richmond. Students will discuss how habitats are communities and how there are many different types of habitats. Students will then explore different habitat sensory bins (forest, ocean, farm, desert, polar + bird and nature themed bins). Sensory bottles are available for those who will put small parts in their mouths.

Brief Overview: This workshop begins with a read aloud of Trout Are Made of Trees by April Pulley Sayre to activate prior knowledge about animals and food chains. Students will put their knowledge to the test with food chain puzzles. Students will then learn about food webs and how easily a population can be affected by small changes. To conclude the workshop students will create their own animal out of Lego and do a gallery walk to show their peers.
